Well I moved into my new home in Utrecht, which as an address two weeks ago meant nothing to me, but since I've come to see that the address is quite good, as I'm minutes from the city center, a description that apparently fetches a hefty sum in this city. The building is called Parnassos, and it is an international apartment, separated into corridors. Each corridor has about six rooms, two showers and a kitchen, which also serves as a common room (because it has a tv). My particular corridor is inhabited by quite an eclectic group, though some people are on there way out and some have just arrived like me. I share my kitchen with two Aussie law students, two Ukranian ladies, two girls from Denmark, a Brit and an Italian guy. In case you haven't spotted a theme, I should say that my roommate is from the States, though Utah might be one of those you can't remember on the geography test. Barry's a good guy though, he has a great taste in music and has a sister who lives in Holland, who was kind enough to take us out last night.
We dined at Cafe de Stoog, or "the stick", and sampled their beer menu, and the surprising favorite was a Japanese beer called iki, which had a hint of a green tea flavor. I'm starting to get used to dipping my fries in mayonnaise instead of ketchup, mostly because I have to dip them in something. After dinner we went to De Belgia for a bier. De Belgia boasts a menu of almost 200 beers, and we've made it a goal on our corridor to sample each one of them throughout the semester. I enjoyed .25cL of Delerium Tremens, which isn't quite as intimidating as it sounds.
This morning marked the start of the academic semester, and I attended various orientation sessions all day, I'll spare you the details. Though it felt a lot like the first day of high school, as I met more people than I can remember. I had the pleasure of sitting between two Greeks, and once they had pried out the fact that I like basketball, immediately bragged about their world basketball championship. The girl was actually more excited about it, I thought maybe she was on the team. Turns out she's not.
Although I picked up a nasty cold as a result of the fast-changing Dutch weather and my own failure to act at all healthy of late, the brightest spot of the day came after I looked over my class schedule multiple times until I finally believed that I only have class on Mondays and Wednesdays...at 11. I should be able to swing that.
Ammendment: I just read that Favre is returning for another Green Bay Packer season. That's actually the brightest spot of the day. Yeah, I'm serious.
